Why I Built This
A Note from the Founder
I’ve spent my career as a software developer building tools to solve problems, but the idea for YouDownloadMeow! didn’t come from a boardroom.
It came from a security alert shared by a local business in downtown Youngstown. The video showed a shared parking lot—the same lot used by a non-profit my wife supports. In the footage, a man was systematically checking every vehicle's door and hatch.
It was a familiar sight; living in the inner city, we’ve dealt with "car hoppers" passing through our own neighborhood multiple times a week this year.
The Transit Connection
One of the most frustrating things we’ve learned is that these incidents aren't always isolated or random. We’ve seen cases where thieves are eventually caught downtown, having used the local bus system to move between neighborhoods.
When you see a video like that, you realize how vital it is to have a record. If that person is picked up by police months later—or if they return to the area after being released a year later—having that original footage accessible is the only way to connect the dots.
The Fragility of the Feed
As I watched that Reel, I realized that relying on a social media "feed" for security is a risk. Content is ephemeral. A business might delete a post to clean up their page, or a platform’s algorithm might bury a vital piece of evidence just when you need to find it for a report.
Our Mission
I built YouDownloadMeow! to be a fast, flat, and minimal way to pull those videos into your own personal archive. We don’t host these videos, and we don’t track your downloads. We simply provide the bridge between the social media cloud and your local storage to ensure that when a "Reel" contains something important, it doesn't just vanish.
While many use our service for fun, there is a serious side to digital preservation. We believe you should have the right to keep a copy of the media that affects your safety.
